October’s dark and chilly evenings are the perfect time to put on a big sweater, grab a pumpkin latte, and open up a book that’s guaranteed to scare the living daylights out of you. How do writers create settings, plots, and characters that terrify? We’ll find out from Kim Savage, whose After the Woods makes the Middlesex Fells seem positively sinister; Dawn Kurtagich, whose And the Trees Crept In might also make you think twice before your next woodsy hike; and Margot Harrison, whose psychological thriller The Killer in Me will keep you guessing (and jumping at strange noises) late into the night. Don’t be too scared, though! The Boston Public Library’s Laura Koenig is here to guide the discussion—and hopefully keep us safe, too.
