Caroline A. Jones

Caroline A. Jones is a scholar, writer, documentary filmmaker, and professor of art history in the History, Theory, and Criticism of Architecture and Art program at MIT, with a focus on modern and contemporary art and its technological modes of production, distribution, and reception. Trained at Harvard and the Institute of Fine Arts in New York, she holds a PhD from Stanford University and has previously worked in museum administration and exhibition curation, with positions at the Museum of Modern Art New York and Harvard University Art Museums. She is also the recipient of fellowships from institutions including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies, and the Stanford Humanities Center. Her work includes Eyesight Alone: Clement Greenberg’s Modernism and the Bureaucratization of the Sense; Machine in the Studio: Constructing the Postwar American Artist, winner of a Charles Eldredge prize from the Smithsonian Institution; Bay Area Figurative Art; and Modern Art at Harvard, and her writing has been published in various academic journals. Most recently, she served as co-editor of Experience: Culture, Cognition, and the Common Sense, a collection of conversations with artists, musicians, philosophers, anthropologists, historians, and neuroscientists.
