Colson Whitehead

Fiction Keynote

Colson Whitehead is a novelist, essayist, and critic whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, Harper’s, and Granta. He is the author of seven novels, most notably The Intuitionist, which was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway award; John Henry Days, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; Sag Harbor, finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award; and Zone One, a New York Times bestseller. A recipient of a 2002 MacArthur Fellowship and 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship for fiction, Whitehead’s work engages with tensions and dilemmas at the root of American society. His latest work, The Underground Railroad, is a historical imagining of a slave’s desperate journey towards freedom, which Publishers Weekly calls an example of “literature at its finest and history at its most barbaric.”
