Juliette Kayyem

Juliette Kayyem has spent over fifteen years managing government responses to major crises at the federal and state levels, most recently serving as President Obama’s Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at the Department of Homeland Security. She has also served as Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick’s Homeland Security Advisor, as a member of the National Commission on Terrorism, as a trial attorney and counselor in the Civil Rights Division at the Justice Department, and as a board member at Mass Inc., the International Centre for Sport Security, and the Red Cross of Massachusetts. Her work has earned a Distinguished Public Service Award, the highest medal awarded to a civilian by the U.S. Coast Guard, and she was a 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist for her editorial columns in the Boston Globe focused on ending the Pentagon’s combat exclusion rule against women. She is currently a faculty member at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, where she teaches emergency management and national security, and moderator of her own WGBH podcast. In her debut memoir, Security Mom, Kayyem shares her surprisingly relatable life as a mother and offers advice on how we can improve national security through acts both public and personal.
